My numbers aren't exact but Lakewood has something like 15% of the welfare, SSA, food stamps and everything else beneficiaries in the entire state. They have an entire organization dedicated to getting their residents all the financial assistance possible.They studiously avoid paying property taxes, they milk the school system to the point of bankruptcy, they grind out welfare babies by the dozens, they ignore zoning, construction and occupancy codes and they want to run their neighborhoods via archaic and ridiculous "religious" standards that were old-fashioned a hundred years ago. If you go by the numbers their NY enclave (Kiryas Joel) is the most poverty-ridden municipality in the country (Lakewood is no doubt close), as they literally live off public assistance.He specifically did not at the press conference today.
